Sustainable in the City: Thinking Upstream
Metro Public Works and Urban Green Lab are partnering on a new educational series “Sustainable in the City: Thinking Upstream” focused on how Nashvillians can better reduce, reuse, and recycle and live more sustainably.
Free and open to the public, the series will be hosted by Metro Public Works’ Waste Reduction Program Manager, Jenn Harrman, and Urban Green Lab’s Sustainability Education Manager, Patrick King. “Sustainable in the City: Thinking Upstream” will feature interviews, presentations, and panel discussions with Nashville’s top experts in all areas of waste and sustainability.
This virtual series will be offered twice per month with new episodes airing on the second and fourth Wednesday at noon. The schedule for the first quarter of this new educational series is as follows:
- January 13– “Bottles, Jars, and Jugs: Why only some plastic is recyclable in Nashville”
- January 27– “Big Plastic and the Economics of Recycling”
- February 10– “Creating a Smart Yard: Composting, Pollution Prevention, and Planting Native”
- February 24– “Eating Locally and Supporting Local Food Systems”
Wildlife in Urban Environments
- March 10– “How to help local wildlife thrive in your own backyard”
- March 24– “The Life of Litter in Our Environment and Ecological System”
Recycle Right Lunch n’ Learn
Do you have questions about recycling in Nashville? Join us for this virtual lunch 'n' learn workshop to learn about the importance of recycling and how to Recycle Right. This webinar will cover:

The Dirt on Composting
Backyard composting is an easy way to reduce your food waste and improve your garden soil to help plants grow. In this virtual workshop, you’ll learn about what compost is, why composting is good for the environment and your garden, and how to start composting at home. Each webinar includes two chances to win an Earth Machine Compost Bin.

Metro Tree Advisory Committee mission is working closely with city departments and non-profit partners, is to recommend tree policies, educate the community about the benefits of trees and proper tree planting and care, and promote tree planting and preservation.
Tree Talk is held on the third Tuesday of the month at noon and features a new guest speaker and tree topic.
