On April 19, 1960, over 3,000 protestors marched silently from North Nashville to the Davidson County Courthouse in response to the bombing of civil rights attorney Z. Alexander Looby’s home. This march led to a defining moment when student leaders C.T. Vivian and Diane Nash confronted Mayor Ben West, prompting his public acknowledgment that segregation was immoral—a crucial step toward desegregation in Nashville and beyond.
Throughout the Civil Rights era, brave Black women like Fisk University student Diane Nash put their lives on the line to dismantle Nashville's norms of segregation.
This Women's History Month, Trustee Metropolitan Trustee Erica S. Gilmore announces her 3rd Annual Diane Nash Commemorative Walk. Together with More Than A Walk Inc. (led by Shawn M. Dromgoole II), and America Walks, will kick off Trustee Gilmore's 3rd Annual Walks With the Trustee series by Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the 1960 Nashville Civil Rights March.
Trustee Gilmore invites you to walk alongside her to the Old Nashville Courthouse (1 Public Square) on this same day 65 years later.
Start Location: First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill
Presentations Begin: 12:00 p.m.
We'd be honored to have you join us in this tribute to Nash and the other civil rights activists who fought for justice. Please confirm your attendance.
