RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-54
A resolution recognizing the celebration of the right to vote for women.
WHEREAS, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1920, guaranteed the right to vote to American women, a major step toward equality in all aspects of American society; and
WHEREAS, in 1920, Tennessee became the final and decisive 36th state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment which granted women the right to vote and hold office; and
WHEREAS, in1920, 83 years ago, the halls of government and voting booths opened to women in Tennessee and across the nation; and
WHEREAS, we observe the advances made in empowering women to fully participate in the political, cultural, social, and economic life of our country and to continue to exercise their right to vote; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize all women and the significance of this accomplishment in history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the celebration of the right to vote for women.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
