RESOLUTION NO. RS2011-1584
A resolution extending condolences on behalf of the citizens of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County to the Japanese people and the Government of Japan on the occasion of the great tragedy.
WHEREAS, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m. Japan Standard Time on Friday, March 11, 2011, with the epicenter located off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan, in the Sanriku region of Miyagi Prefecture; and
WHEREAS, this was the largest scale earthquake to occur in recorded Japanese history; and
WHEREAS, this occurrence of a severe, sudden, and extraordinary event has caused damages, great loss of life and property, thereby endangering the health, safety, welfare, and living conditions of a substantial number of people as the result from the earthquake and the tremendous tsunami waves that followed; and
WHEREAS, the people of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County and the State of Tennessee have great bonds of affection for Japan and the Japanese people; and
WHEREAS, the location of the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville makes Japan the only foreign country with a representative office in the state of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the hearts of all Nashvillians have been touched by the scenes of devastation throughout Japan as reported by the media and are filled with deep sadness at the suffering of the Japanese people; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby extends its heartfelt condolences on behalf of the citizens of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County to the Japanese people and the Government of Japan on the occasion of the great tragedy with which they have been stricken.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council calls upon all Nashvillians to make charitable donations as they are able for the relief of those affected by the disaster in Japan.
Section 3. The Metropolitan Council Office is hereby directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to His Excellency Hiroshi Sato, Consul-General of Japan in Nashville.
Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
