A resolution recognizing Hope Hines, Sports Director of NewsChannel 5 WTVF-TV, on his retirement.

WHEREAS, Hope Hines, Nashville’s beloved long time sports director, who has worked in sports casting for more than four decades, and who is highly respected in other markets around the nation as a seasoned professional and play-by-play broadcaster, will be signing off from NewsChannel 5 for the final time in July of 2011; and

WHEREAS, Hope joined WTVF, then known as WLAC-TV, as Sports Director in 1971; his time with NewsChannel 5 was placed on hold in 1975 when he took stints in San Diego, New Orleans, Charlotte and Baltimore, before returning home to Music City in 1983, where he was welcomed by sports fans and his beloved NewsChannel 5 family; and

WHEREAS, Hope’s distinctive voice and familiar face filled our living rooms nightly bringing sports news to life each evening at 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. as he became a daily part of our everyday lives; and

WHEREAS, Hope Hines has received six broadcast Emmy awards, named Best Sportscaster in the Southeast, received an Iris Award for the best produced half hour sports program in television and was named recipient of the Silver Circle Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for 25 years of distinguished service to the industry; and

WHEREAS, through his time and efforts, Hope Hines has provided immeasurable assistance to his annual Hope Hines Fore Kids Celebrity Golf Tournament which he has hosted since 1994, he is active in his church and is a motivational speaker; and

WHEREAS, the City owes Hope’s wife Pat, his children and grandchildren a great deal of thanks as they have had to share him with all of us; and

WHEREAS, with his retirement, Hope will now have the time and freedom to golf, enjoy his family and grandchildren without regard to wall calendars and clocks; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the Metropolitan Council wishes Hope Hines all the best as he will be truly missed from the NewsChannel 5 lineup and all the best in his retirement.


Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Hope Hines, Sports Director of NewsChannel 5 WTVF-TV, on his retirement.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Hope Hines.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
