Prepare for Winter Weather and Snowfall
Vehicle Preparation
- Tires: Ensure your tires are in good condition and have adequate tread. Consider winter tires if you're in an area with heavy snowfall.
- Battery: Cold weather can drain batteries quickly. Make sure yours is fully charged and replace it if it's old or weak.
- Windshield Wipers and Fluid: Replace wiper blades and fill up your windshield washer reservoir with a winter-grade solution.
- Emergency Kit: Keep a kit in your car that includes blankets, snacks, water, a flashlight, gloves, and a small shovel.
Home Preparation
- Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes with foam insulation to prevent freezing. Let faucets drip during extremely cold temperatures to keep water flowing.
- Roof and Gutters: Clean gutters and inspect the roof for any loose or missing shingles. Snow buildup can cause leaks or structural damage.
- Windows and Doors: Check for drafts. Install weather stripping and consider thermal curtains or window film to keep warmth in.
- Heating System: Have your heating system inspected and serviced to ensure it’s working efficiently.
Stay Informed
- Weather Alerts: Sign up for local weather alerts so you can be proactive about winter weather events.
- Power Outage Plan: In case of a power outage, have extra blankets, a portable phone charger, and a flashlight readily available.
Health Precautions
- Dress in Layers: Wear multiple layers to trap body heat. Don't forget gloves, hats, scarves, and insulated boots.
- Keep Active: Try to stay active to keep circulation going, especially if you need to be outside for extended periods.
- Stay Hydrated: Dry, heated air indoors can lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of water even if you don't feel thirsty.
