The mission of the Metro Human Relations Commission (MHRC) is to protect and promote the personal safety, health, security, peace, and general welfare of all people in Nashville and Davidson County. We educate to promote a better understanding between groups, cultures, and ideologies. We advocate to give voice to segments of our society that have often been unheard and left out of our civil discourse and decisions.
Our departments:
- Investigates discrimination complaints based on Title VI as it relates to the access and use of Metro resources.
- Educates the community through our equity-focused research and programming.
- Advocates for improved standards through the passing of legislation advancing human rights and stronger human relations in our city and county.
MHRC is the central resource for Title VI compliance in Metro General Government. Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act requires that “no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal assistance”.
Community engagement and projects are informed by the 17-member Commission. The Commission meets on the first Monday of the month, and the public is encouraged to participate.
