Upon the adoption of Ordinance BL2018-1199, which eliminated the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission, the Metro Social Services Board of Commissioners approved a new name for the staff of the former Commission: the Metro Homeless Impact Division.
The name change has not affected staff's role within Metro Social Services. The Homeless Impact Division's goal is to bring expertise to the community and support the development and implementation of a strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness in Nashville. As outlined in BL2018-1199, staff supports the work of the Nashville-Davidson County Continuum of Care Homelessness Planning Council.
In 2018, the Metro Homeless Impact Division through the Social Services Department also became the community's HMIS Lead. HMIS stands for Homeless Management Information System and "is a local information technology system used to collect client-level data and data on the provision of housing and services to homeless individuals and families and persons at risk of homelessness." (from the HUD Website)
The following is a summary of the main tasks of the Metro Homeless Impact Division:
- Offer expertise and support to the work of the Nashville-Davidson County Continuum of Care Homelessness Planning Council
- Serve as the Continuum of Care's (CoC) HMIS Lead
- Lead and co-lead local community efforts by serving as the backbone organization to further collaborative goals
- Provide expertise and training to implement a community-wide Coordinated Entry System as required of the CoC by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
- Coordinate Metro departments in the city's response to homelessness
