Vision Zero is a new way of thinking about traffic safety. In Nashville, a new philosophy and approach to traffic safety is needed to achieve Vision Zero.
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, the number of drivers killed in Nashville every year has increased since 2016, with a record high expected to be set in 2021. Additionally, the number of people killed while walking in Nashville has also increased every year since 2016, with a record high expected to be set in 2021.
Traffic crashes and deaths are preventable. We need to prioritize infrastructure and behavior change that will reduce crashes and fatalities, starting with our most dangerous places in Nashville for walking, bicycling, and driving.
Metro is committed to developing a safe multimodal transportation system for all that connects neighborhoods, residents, and businesses to the places that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. As a Vision Zero city, our sidewalk, paving, and traffic management improvements will reduce preventable injuries and deaths and value safety for our pedestrians.
