The Nashville Department of Emergency Communications (DEC) is thrilled to announce that the Rescue Rex program has been recognized as a national award-winning initiative by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). This prestigious award specifically honors the 2024 Rescue Rex coloring book, a creative and engaging public education tool, designed to teach children about the importance of 911.
For over 20 years, Rescue Rex has delivered critical lessons to students throughout Davidson County, teaching them the essential dos and don’ts of calling 911. The beloved mascot provides engaging, age-appropriate guidance on the right and wrong reasons to call and empowers young children with the knowledge of what to do during an emergency call. The 2024 coloring book exemplifies this mission by combining fun activities with life-saving information, ensuring that these lessons resonate with children in an impactful way. To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, the coloring book is offered in both English and Spanish, with plans to expand to additional languages in the future.

Overseen by the Davidson County Emergency Communications District (ECD) Board, the Rescue Rex program is a vital component of the Nashville DEC’s mission to enhance community safety through education and outreach. With captivating performances and interactive lessons, Rescue Rex reaches thousands of students annually, ensuring that the next generation understands the critical role of 911 in saving lives and getting people the help they need.
“This award highlights the importance of educating our community especially our youngest residents on how to use 9-1-1,” said Cleo Duckworth, Davidson County ECD Board Chairperson. “Rescue Rex has been a trusted voice for safety and preparedness in Davidson County. We are proud to currently offer the coloring book in both English and Spanish, with plans to expand to additional languages in the future.”
Rescue Rex has had a lasting impact on the youth of Nashville and Davidson County. Many adults who grew up attending Nashville schools fondly remember Rescue Rex visiting their classrooms and teaching them the importance of 911. By leaving such an impressionable mark on young minds, Rescue Rex continues to shape a culture of safety and preparedness that benefits the entire community.
