The Metropolitan Government has three main pay plans covering most of its full-time employees: General Government, Police and Fire, and Health Department, which are approved by the Civil Service Commission. These pay plans contain various salary ranges for the different types of jobs included in each plan. See the links to the pay plans below.
Each plan includes two main types of pay schedules, Steps and Open Range. In Step schedules, employees are typically hired at the first step and progress through the salary range annually with acceptable performance. Open Range plans include a minimum and maximum salary only, and employees may be compensated anywhere in the range, depending on factors such as performance, skills and experience, in accordance with Civil Service policy. Most jobs on Open Range grades involve work of a professional nature that typically requires a college degree, or the skills commonly associated with an advanced education.
