The Metropolitan Action Commission has been notified by the Tennessee Department of Housing Development (THDA) of changes that will impact the start of the MAC energy assistance program.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) which helps with utility payments for heating, cooling, and energy crises, will now start on November 1 instead of October 1.
The change is due to the launch of a new eligibility platform that is being implemented by THDA across the state of Tennessee.
In response to this delay, Metro Action plans to utilize city-appropriated funds to support residents most in need during this "gap" period until normal operations resume in November.
During the gap between October 1 to October 31, the agency will prioritize assistance for the most vulnerable residents. Applicants facing disconnection and meet the following criteria will be prioritized:
- Households with disabled members
- Households with children 5 years or younger
- Veterans
- Adults over the age of 60
Applicants who are already disconnected will also be prioritized.
Residents who do not fall within these urgent categories can begin applying for help starting on November 1.
The change will not impact MAC's housing payment assistance program that assists with rent, mortgage and deposits and other emergencies, which begins on October 1.
The last day to apply for all the assistance program for the current program year is September 15 to allow for transition into the new program year.
