For years, the Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) has launched its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on October 1. However, due to recent notification from the Tennessee Department of Housing Development (THDA), the program's start date has been delayed to November 1, 2025.
The delay is due to the statewide rollout of a new eligibility platform being implemented by THDA.
"Nationally, households with low to moderate incomes spend an average of three times more of their incomes on energy costs than other households with higher incomes," said Lisa McCrady Beverly, MAC Director of Communications and Engagement.
Each year, MAC serves nearly 10,000 households through its energy assistance program. During the first 30 days of the application period, the agency typically experiences a surge, serving approximately 1,368 in the first 30 days.
To support residents during the October 1–31 gap, MAC will use city-appropriated funds to assist those with the most urgent needs. Priority will be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Households with disabled members
- Households with children age 5 or younger
- Veterans
- Adults over the age of 60
- Households that are already disconnected
Residents who do not meet these criteria may begin applying for assistance on November 1. "We want to help residents navigate this change as well as assist customers with the most urgent needs," said Beverly. This change does not affect MAC's housing payment assistance program, which includes support for rent, mortgage, and deposits. That program will begin as scheduled on October 1.
For more information or to apply online, visit MAC's website or call 615-862-8860. Customers with urgent needs are encouraged to visit MAC in person at 1281 Murfreesboro Pike. The Customer Care Center is open Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
