Episode Description
Have you ever cleaned out your fridge and dumped out your leftover or expired food into the trash? Many of us have, and in doing so, about one third of what Nashville residents throw away is food and yard waste. When this material is thrown away, it takes up space in local landfills and creates a potent greenhouse gas called methane. One way to keep food waste out of the trash is by composting it, returning rich nutrients back into the soil to nourish new plants. While many Nashville residents may be aware of the benefits of composting, not every home has the space or means to conveniently compost. Nashville’s new Food Scraps Pickup Pilot program could be a solution to a few of these problems. Join us to get the dirt on composting from Jenn Harrman, Zero Waste Program Manager at Metro Nashville Waste Services. We will be discussing the Food Scraps Pickup Pilot and how this program fits into Nashville’s overall waste reduction goals.
