On April 26, 2023, the newly designated Third Ave. Recreation Area was recognized as a 2023 Urban Land Institute Nashville Chapter Excellence in Design Project. As one of eighteen nominees, the Third Ave. Recreation Area was evaluated based on Urban Land Institute’s mission to “Shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide.”
The Urban Land Institute Excellence in Development Awards celebrate developments that are exceptional in their innovation and impact on the community and within their asset class.
Metro Water Services Director Scott Potter stated, “This award is recognition of the efforts of Metro Water Services, our community and neighborhood partners to use Metro Water Services projects as an opportunity to improve our community and to educate about the importance of our most vital resource: water.”
The Third Ave. Recreation Area is part of Metro Water Services’ Central Water Reclamation Facility Upgrade Project and was created in coordination with input from the surrounding community.
Along with a greenway and enhanced lighting, the linear site features a stream area that incorporates water play with water pumps and check dams to demonstrate water flow in a fun manner, a ropes climbing course, and a suspension bridge over a bioretention area featuring natural landscaping.
