Project Status
Phase 1 of the Martin Luther King bridge deck replacement began on Monday, October 2 demolition for Phase 1 is complete.
The Bridge Program anticipates shifting the project to Phase 2 mid-February 2024.
Next steps are as follows:
- February 19: YMCA Way will be closed to thru traffic for the remainder of the project. Access to the Tennessee State University (TSU) lots and street parking will remain accessible.
- February 22 (night): remove phase 1 traffic control measures and swap to phase 2.
- February 26: begin nighttime demolition of phase 2 (closing Rosa Parks and reducing to one lane each way on MLK Jr. Blvd during nighttime working hours). Rosa Parks will be closed at night and will re-open 1 lane during the day.
Project Detours
Sidewalks on the north side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. will be closed, with pedestrian detours to the southside via crosswalks on either side of the bridge. Two lanes of travel in each direction will remain.
The access ramp onto Rosa L. Parks Blvd. from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd./Charlotte Ave, both south and northbound will be open during phase 2.
YMCA Way from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd./Charlotte Ave is closed to thru traffic for the remainder od the project. The access ramp from Rosa L. Parks Blvd. to YMCA Way will be closed. The only access point for YMCA Way will be off of Church Street. Access to the Tennessee State University (TSU) lots and street parking will remain accessible.
The Tennessee General Services Parking Lot Access at 801 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. has been relocated to Rosa L. Parks Ave.

Project Description
The existing bridge deck will be removed and replaced. The proposed bridge deck will be constructed using a phased construction method in order to maintain traffic over the bridge throughout the duration of the project.
Intermittent lane closures on Rosa L Parks Blvd and Dr. Martin L King Jr Blvd/Charlotte Ave will be required in order to construct the new bridge deck. The project has been coordinated with local utility companies.
