The Complete Streets approach aims to provide a safe transportation system that accommodates all users whether they walk, bike, ride transit, or drive. Complete Streets also helps us meet our Vision Zero goals by using a holistic and proactive approach to safe street design.
Green Streets are a way to improve sustainability and resilience through features like bioswales and street trees. This improves water and air quality, reduces urban heat, and supports biodiversity. These strategies often have synergies with Vision Zero and Complete Streets, by helping reduce traffic speeds and providing separation between modes.
In January of 2024, Mayor O’Connell signed Executive Order 45: Green and Complete Streets Policy, reaffirming and expanding Nashville’s commitment to Green and Complete Streets. The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) has produced a Complete Streets Implementation Guide that serves as a roadmap for navigating existing resources and outlines the process for aligning all projects with this approach.
Complete Streets Projects
Complete streets are both a process and a product. The complete streets approach means that when we make changes to the street, we consider people of all ages and abilities, no matter how they choose to travel. Not all complete streets look the same but you know it’s a complete streets project because it improves multimodal mobility and safety.
