The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) has announced that Nashville is ranked as the second-best Complete Streets policy in the nation in a new report from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. The Best Complete Streets Policies 2025 report evaluates policies adopted in 2023 and 2024 using the Complete Streets Policy Framework, a national model of best practices for crafting policies that can be implemented in communities of all sizes and contexts.
Recent notable complete street projects in Nashville include the 12th Avenue South Complete and Green Street project and the Madison Station Boulevard Complete and Green Street Project, with several additional projects ongoing throughout the city.
"We're excited to get recognition for an approach to our streets that prioritizes safety over speed,” said Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell. “Complete Streets make it easier and safer for everyone, no matter how they choose to move around the city. One of our first steps as an administration was to strengthen and reissue our Complete and Green Streets Executive Order. Now, thanks to overwhelming voter approval, we're going to build a generation of safer streets that are good for people and good for business. We can keep all of Nashville's people moving. Safely."
“Complete Streets policies matter in every community because they’re designed to meet the specific needs of that place,” said Heidi Simon, Director of Thriving Communities at Smart Growth America. “The strongest policies make it safer and easier for people to get where they need to go – whether they’re walking, driving, biking, or taking transit. We applaud Nashville’s commitment to a policy that’s poised to deliver real, on-the-ground improvements for the people who live there.”
The Best Complete Streets Policies Report 2025 evaluates and ranks the 43 new Complete Streets policies passed across the country in 2023 and 2024, in jurisdictions of many sizes and contexts. Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, building, and maintaining streets that enables safe access for everyone, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
