Metro Nashville Crime Statistics

The MNPD collects and reports data in both the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program and the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). These two reporting methodologies collect a vast amount of material that can be accessed by the general public, researchers, media, and others regarding the levels of crime in the United States.

The UCR format is more concise and therefore conducive to “indexing” or making comparisons over time in Nashville and in comparing Nashville to peer cities.

The below listed reports are in the UCR format and include FBI designated UCR Part I crimes*.  These Part I crimes include eight selected crime classifications (murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson ) because they are the crimes most likely to be reported, they are most likely to occur with sufficient frequency to provide an adequate basis for comparison, and are serious crimes by nature. Therefore, they are the immediate focus of police activity. Each report also includes information on the sources of the data include in the report.

* Please note that arson offenses in Nashville Davidson County are investigated by the Nashville Fire Department and not included in public MNPD UCR reports.
