WIC supports families during pregnancy and after their baby is born. Any amount of breastfeeding can be considered a success and every family’s feeding journey is different. WIC will support you and your baby whether you breastfeed fully, combine breastfeeding and formula, or your feeding plan changes.

- Prepare before your baby is born
- Work through common breastfeeding concerns
- Find feeding positions that work for you and your baby
- Continue breastfeeding while returning to work or school
- Obtain a breast pump when appropriate

All Davidson County WIC staff complete breastfeeding education so families can receive knowledgeable and encouraging support throughout their WIC experience. Each Davidson County WIC clinic has designated breastfeeding experts. Our team includes breastfeeding peer counselors, Certified Lactation Counselors, and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants.
Davidson County has one of Tennessee’s highest WIC breastfeeding rates. Metro Public Health Department’s WIC program received the USDA Breastfeeding Gold Award of Excellence in 2025 for its work supporting WIC families.
