The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program serves Davidson County families, supporting them throughout pregnancy, until the child turns five. Metro Public Health Department staff can enroll families that are eligible at their certification appointment.
If you fill out the WIC Interest Form, the WIC team will contact you to review your information and schedule a certification appointment. You will not start to receive your WIC benefits until after your certification appointment.
You can also make an appointment with the WIC team without filling out the WIC Interest Form by calling one of the four WIC clinics directly.
At your appointment we'll confirm you qualify, talk through your family's needs, and set up your benefits. This visit is what makes WIC official. (You may hear it called your "certification" appointment.)
Bring each person who is applying, unless a WIC staff member tells you otherwise, along with your required documents.
WIC generally issues three months of benefits at a time, showing up in the WICShopper app. Use WICShopper to view available benefits, start and end dates, foods still available, recent purchases, and appointment reminders. Unused benefits do not roll over.
Before another set of benefits can be issued, complete the check-in selected by the nutritionist at certification. This may be a telephone appointment or WICSmart lesson.
To qualify for WIC, you must live in Tennessee, be within WIC's income guidelines, and be in one of the categories below:
Families who live outside Davidson County can receive WIC services here as long as they’re willing to attend in-person certification appointments at one of our four clinics.
To qualify, household income must be at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level. For exact income limits by household size, use the USDA WIC Prescreening Tool below or contact a WIC clinic.
If you or your child are currently enrolled in TennCare, SNAP, or Families First, you may automatically meet WIC's income requirement. CoverKids does not automatically meet WIC's income requirement, however many families with CoverKids still qualify based on their household income.
WIC reviews the household's gross income (before taxes or deductions) for the 30 days before the certification appointment. WIC counts the income from people who live together and share household expenses. This includes income from a spouse or partner who shares the household, even if the person applying does not personally work.
