A domestic violence suspect who advanced aggressively on police is in stable condition after being shot in the leg Wednesday night by a North Precinct officer.
Police made an emergency response to a home in the 2100 block of Owen Street at 8:57 p.m. Wednesday after a 12-year-old boy called 911 and reported that his father had assaulted his mother, pushed her down a flight of brick steps in front of the house and then drove her away. The 12-year-old reported that his parents had been arguing all day. Home with him were his six-year-old sister and four-year-old brother.
Officers Melissa Flores and Chase Harriman responded in separate police vehicles. They spotted Sekou L. Allen, 43, driving in the neighborhood. They attempted to pull Allen over. He wound up stopping in front of family house with his wife still in the vehicle. The preliminary investigation shows that Allen got out of the car and advanced aggressively toward the officers. A Taser was deployed which appeared to have no impact. Officer Harriman slipped on gravel and fell onto his back. When Allen appeared prepared to jump on Harriman, Flores fired, striking Allen in the leg.
Flores was taken to a hospital to be medically cleared due to the stress of the incident.
Domestic Violence detectives will be swearing out an arrest warrant charging Allen with domestic abuse.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Flores is a four-year MNPD veteran. Harriman has been an MNPD officer for two years.
