Youth Services detectives are continuing their investigation into this morning’s fatal shooting of a 10-year-old boy inside a home in the 3400 block of Meadowlake Terrace in the Hermitage Precinct.
The deceased is identified as Lathan Sweatt, who lived in the home with his family.
The investigation to this point shows that Lathan, his 14-year-old stepbrother, and his 12-year-old brother had gone upstairs to play a computer game. Their parents had left the home with two other children to run an errand. It is presently believed that the 14-year-old retrieved a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol that was being stored at the top of a closet in the upstairs room and was handling it when the gun discharged, striking Lathan in the head. He died shortly after arrival at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
The call to 911 came in at 10:40 a.m.
