Violent Crimes detectives Thursday night arrested convicted felon Demarius Fite, 25, after spotting him driving a stolen 2019 Ram pickup truck at a high rate of speed on I-65 just before the Rosa L. Parks Boulevard exit. The vehicle’s headlights were off.
Detectives maintained a visual on the pickup until a police helicopter got overhead. Fite drove to the 1600 block of 22nd Avenue North where he exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.
A sawed-off shotgun was recovered from the Ram, which had been reported stolen Thursday morning. The serial number had been altered on the shotgun.
Fite, who has previous convictions for aggravated assault, burglary, and theft, is now charged with vehicle theft, reckless driving, felon in possession of a firearm, driving on a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, and alteration of the serial numbers on the shotgun. He is being held in lieu of $76,000 bond.
