Diligent work by East Precinct officers late Thursday night resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old man for a string of car burglaries in the areas of Summer Place and Lenore Street, and the burglary of Explore Community School on S. 7th Street.
Tonderius Sanchez Jones, who at the time of his arrest last night was free on $30,000 bond for shooting a gun into a Dellway Villa Road Apartment last year, is now facing a number of criminal charges, including seven counts of vehicle burglary, burglary of the school, assaulting police for kicking an officer trying to arrest him, resisting arrest, evading arrest, and retaliation for making threats against the families of the officers who were arresting him.
Officers initially responded to the 500 block of Summer Place after a woman reported chasing a man who had broken into her car. She described him as wearing a white sweatshirt, black jeans, a ski mask, and carrying a backpack. Police flooded the area, but did not find the suspect.
A short time later, officers were alerted to a break-in at the school. School security had located the burglar wearing the same clothing inside an office, but he fled before police arrived. Through continued efforts to find the suspect, officers spotted him walking on Shelby Avenue toward I-24. He tried to run, but didn’t get far. A search of Jones and his backpack revealed broken glass from car windows, a window punch tool, money, six cell phones, a ski mask, and a number of credit cards belonging to various people other than Jones. Around the time of his arrest, additional victims reported vehicle break-ins on Lenore Street for which evidence shows Jones was responsible.
A judicial commissioner set bond for Jones at $122,000.
