A female pedestrian has died after being struck Saturday night by a Nissan Versa in the middle of Brick Church Pike near Moorewood Drive. The 17-year-old driver of the Versa reported the woman was standing in the middle of the roadway on the double yellow lines as he was heading northbound on Brick Church Pike when she walked in front of his vehicle.
The 17-year-old told investigators he attempted to miss the woman, but was unable to avoid striking her. The teen left the scene, went home and told his parents, who then called dispatch.
The 17-year-old was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, not having a driver's license, not having insurance and failure to report.
Before the crash was reported to police, the 25-year-old driver of a Ford Fusion reported he swerved going northbound on Brick Church Pike to avoid a mattress in the roadway when he thought he ran over a pot hole. When he reached his home a few miles away, he discovered the woman's body was underneath the Fusion and called dispatch.
The 25-year-old did not show any signs of impairment.
The Medical Examiner's Office will work to identify the woman fatally struck in this crash.
