Update: In addition to the three discussed below, there are these 2:
On Saturday afternoon, a 30-year-old woman who had been released from the hospital reported that her injury was related to a gunshot (presumed celebratory gunfire) after the fireworks show had ended Friday night. She reported that she and friends were standing at Rep. John Lewis Way and Demonbreun Street waiting for a rideshare when she felt a burning sensation in her left leg. She did not see any commotion or suspicious activity in the area at the time and believed she might have been hit by debris from a passing vehicle. After arriving at St. Thomas Midtown, it was discovered that a small caliber bullet was in her lower leg.
Late Friday night, a 33-year-old man walked into the Century Farms Emergency Department with a gunshot wound to his left leg. Officers were told that the victim and his friend were at an unknown location on Bell Road and had stopped near an apartment complex to observe fireworks. The victim said he heard what sounded like a gunshot and felt a burning sensation to his leg. They said they did not observe anyone in the immediate area when this occurred. The injury is potentially related to celebratory gunfire.
Three persons in separate areas of downtown received non-critical injuries Friday night from apparent gunfire of undetermined sources. The injuries occurred during or shortly after the fireworks display ended and may have been the result of celebratory shooting into the air.
A 60-year-old man received a wound to his foot. He was unable to provide a specific location of where he was standing when this occurred. He was transported to Vanderbilt for treatment.
A 58-year-old woman was sitting on steps near the intersection of 7th Avenue and Broadway waiting for a shuttle when she felt a wound to her breast. She was transported to Vanderbilt for treatment.
A 26-year-old woman was getting into a ride share vehicle at 1st Avenue and Demonbreun Street when she felt something strike her face, which caused a mark on the bridge of her nose and a swollen upper lip. She, too, was transported to Vanderbilt for treatment.
The victims were among the estimated 365,000 persons who attended Nashville’s Let Freedom Sing celebration.
The police department strongly cautions against celebratory gunfire, which can be inherently dangerous when projectiles, even if fired into the air, fall toward the ground in populated areas.
