Homicide Unit detectives are working to identify a suspect and establish a motive in Saturday night’s fatal stabbing of Marquis D. Churchwell, 32, on Representative John Lewis Way near Church Street.
Officers responding to the 11:25 p.m. call of a man down outside 424 Church Street found Churchwell, who was homeless, in the roadway. A passerby with medical training was rendering aid. Churchwell died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Detectives believe the stabbing occurred on Representative John Lewis Way between Commerce and Church Streets. A surveillance camara showed Churchwell walking up Representative John Lewis Way and onto Church Street. Area businesses continue to be checked to see if they have surveillance footage of the circumstances leading up to Churchwell being stabbed.
