The ongoing homicide investigation into last Friday's fatal shooting of Cassidy Jackson, 23, on Rachels Lane in Hermitage found resolution following Thursday's suicide of suspect Robert E. Smith Jr., 35, in Calhoun, Georgia, after he fired upon Georgia law enforcement during a pursuit before killing himself.
Smith, of Cookeville, was wanted locally on eight counts of aggravated assault and one count of especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated stalking, domestic assault, harassment and vandalism. These all stemmed from incidents earlier this month, none of which involved homicide victim Jackson.
Jackson was found Friday night with a fatal gunshot wound to her head after she was reported missing by her family in Putnam County. Her vehicle was located in Atlanta after it was detected by a license plate reader earlier this week.
Smith was developed as a suspect over the course of the murder investigation, but warrants had not yet been obtained.
Yesterday the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported Smith fired upon Calhoun Police Department officers and then Whitfield County Sheriff's Office deputies after a pursuit. He then crashed the stolen vehicle he was driving and was located inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Evidence collected in Georgia has linked Smith to Jackson's murder on Rachels Lane as well as the other Nashville incidents.
The GBI's investigation into Smith's death is ongoing.
