Traffic Unit investigators are working to identify the driver of a 2001 red Lincoln Navigator who ran off after causing Sunday's 3:20 a.m. four-vehicle crash on I-24 East near the Old Hickory Boulevard exit ramp that killed two people.
The preliminary investigation indicates the Navigator was going too fast in heavy traffic and ran into the back of a stopped Toyota Sienna. The impact caused the Sienna to collide with the rear of a Ford Edge which then pushed the Edge into the back of a Freightliner. The driver of the Navigator fled on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.
The two backseat passengers of the Sienna, Queen Umuhoza, 19, of LaVergne, and Francine Nyanduhura, 22, of Smyrna, died as a result of the crash. The driver of the Sienna and front seat passenger were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Edge was transported to Southern Hills Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
There was no evidence of impairment at the scene.
Anyone with information on the driver of the Lincoln Navigator responsible for this fatal crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
