Investigation by the MNPD Homicide Unit has led to the first-degree murder indictment of Kevon Mayberry, 19, for the October 5 fatal shooting of D’andre Whitley, 22, as he traveled on the interstate near the I-24/I-65 junction.
Whitley was a passenger in a black Mazda sedan that exited the interstate at Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, went out of control and crashed in the 1600 block. Investigation by Detective Chris Dickerson shows that the motive was related to retaliation for a prior fight that didn’t involve Whitley, but one of his friends.
At the time of the murder, Mayberry was serving a 10-year probated sentence in regard to the 2018 fatal shooting of a 15-year-old outside a home on Brookway Drive. Mayberry was age 16 at the time. The case was transferred to adult court, where he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault resulting in death, a second count of aggravated assault, and two counts of felony reckless endangerment.
Mayberry was arrested for violation of probation on October 28 and was still in jail when he was served with the first-degree murder indictment today.
