A license plate camera at Fallbrook Apartments on Dellway Villa Road provided a key image that led to the identification of Terrance Vanpelt, 40, as the suspect in Saturday evening’s critical wounding of a 22-year-old man in the complex parking lot.
TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) detectives arrested an armed Vanpelt this afternoon, despite his efforts to flee. Officers attempted to stop Vanpelt on Brick Church Pike. He sped away, resulting in the successful deployment of a spike strip that flattened two of the tires on his Chevrolet Malibu. Vanpelt continued to drive and was monitored from the air by an MNPD helicopter crew. The car eventually stopped on Masonwood Drive near Gwen Drive. Vanpelt then tried to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended. He was carrying a loaded pistol and $5,252 cash. A bag that Vanpelt discarded was found to contain 31 grams of fentanyl and 43 ecstasy pills.
In Saturday’s case, Vanpelt is alleged to have shot the victim multiple times during an argument after yelling at the man’s girlfriend.
At the time of his arrest today, Vanpelt was free on $43,500 bond stemming from his arrest last October on charges of aggravated sexual battery, aggravated stalking, auto burglary, and vandalism. Vanpelt was convicted of felony aggravated assault in a 2016 case and is prohibited from possessing a gun.
He is jailed this evening in lieu of $476,000 bond on charges of attempted criminal homicide for the apartment complex shooting, unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon, using a gun in the commission of a dangerous felony, and possession of fentanyl and ecstasy for resale.
