Homicide Unit detectives are charging Josue Emanuel Cruz, 18, with this morning’s fatal shooting of Yoel Lopez, 21, inside a car near the intersection of Sterling Boone Drive and Jay Street.
The investigation, being led by Detective Miranda Vaughan, shows that Lopez, his cousin, and Cruz were in a parked Nissan Altima in the 1 a.m. hour listening to music. Lopez was in the driver’s seat, his cousin was in the front passenger seat, and Cruz was in the back seat. Cruz was reported to have been playing with an A-R style pistol when it went off, striking Lopez. Cruz ran from the car. Lopez was placed into the back seat by his cousin, who then drove to a nearby convenience market/gas station at 2802 Nolensville Pike from where police were called.
The investigation led to the issuance of a criminal homicide arrest warrant against Cruz. Specialized Investigations Division detectives located him late this morning outside a Nolensville Pike business. He declined to be interviewed at police headquarters and was taken to jail.
