Officers investigating the April 4 early morning collision at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Demonbreun Street between a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee and a taxicab that killed the two taxi passengers are asking that any bystanders who took video or photos in the immediate aftermath of the crash to please contact them at 615-862-7738.
Kirk Granfors, 64, and his wife, Kathy Granfors, 68, of Jacksonville, Florida, died as a result of the crash. The taxi in which they were riding, a Toyota van, was traveling west on Demonbreun Street and, according to witnesses, had the green light at the 12th Avenue intersection. The Jeep, traveling at a high rate of speed south on 12th Avenue, collided with the passenger side door of the taxi.
It has not yet been determined how many persons were in the stolen Jeep, as only one remained at the scene when officers arrived. That man, George A. Chaney, 37, of Nashville, attempted to flee on foot, but was unable due to his injuries. Chaney was arrested on an outstanding parole violation warrant when he was discharged from the hospital. Officers are pursuing leads as they work to confirm who was driving the Jeep and believe bystander video or photos could help.
