Precision policing public safety work by Specialized Investigations Division TITANS detectives led to Saturday night’s arrest of accused murderer Rico Ransom, 21, who was armed with a rifle while free on bond and wearing an ankle monitor.
Detectives saw a black Dodge Challenger commit multiple traffic offenses before it pulled into a gas station at 26th Avenue North and Clarksville Pike and sat for an unusually long time. They attempted to approach the Challenger, which sped away on Clarksville Pike toward Buchanan Street. A spike strip was used to deflate the tires. The driver, Ransom, headed to Heiman Street and stopped. Detectives ordered him out of the Challenger. Instead, Ransom took off again and tossed an AR-style pistol through the window. Ransom continued driving to Britt Place, where he ran into a wood line. Detectives quickly took him into custody.
Ransom was charged with two counts of felony evading, felony gun possession and driving on a revoked license. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $28,000.
Ransom is due in Criminal Court on June 5 on a first-degree murder indictment for the 2019 fatal shooting of Steven Shelton, 18, on 26th Avenue North.
