Detectives are investigating a self-defense claim in Friday night’s apparent road-rage related shooting on I-24 East near Spring Street that critically injured Regino Rodriguez Perez, 43, of Nashville.
The other driver involved, Hayden Foster, 36, of Alabama, reported that he and Perez were both traveling on I-24 East outside of Nashville and that after he passed Perez, Perez began to tailgate him while flashing his bright lights. Foster said that as they arrived in Nashville, both vehicles came to a stop in the far left lane of travel on I-24 East near Spring Street. According to Foster, Perez got out of a Honda CRV and approached his pickup truck with his right hand behind his back. Foster fired multiple shots, striking Perez. Foster then drove to I/40 and Fesslers Lane where he pulled over around 8 p.m. and called police. Perez drove himself to St. Thomas Hospital Midtown but was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
A .22 caliber handgun was recovered from Foster’s vehicle. Officers recovered four .22 caliber casings and a knife at the I-24/Spring Street scene.
After discussion with the District Attorney’s Office, no charges were placed while the shooting investigation continues.
