A self-defense claim is under investigation for Monday’s 5 p.m. non-fatal shooting in a parking lot at J.C. Napier Homes that critically injured Stiles Felton-Patterson, 20.
Detectives reviewed surveillance video of the incident which appeared to show Felton-Patterson walk up to a blue Dodge Dart with heavy window tint and get into the front passenger seat. After a brief altercation inside the vehicle, Felton-Patterson, wounded, falls out of the car and runs a short distance before throwing a firearm toward a witness. He then collapsed. Responding officers rendered aid prior to Felton-Patterson being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Two guns were later retrieved from the witness.
While detectives were still working the incident, Thomas Long, 23, went to the downtown detention center where he claimed responsibility for the shooting, claiming self-defense. Long reported that Felton-Patterson attempted to rob him at gunpoint and that he retrieved his own gun, shooting Felton-Patterson.
Felton-Patterson will be charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony upon his discharge from the hospital stemming from a June 2023 hold-up at a Brink Haven Avenue apartment. The investigation into yesterday’s shooting continues.
