A shooting suspect is jailed this morning on $45,000 bond following the September 1 gunfire on Sylvan Street at South 6th Street that injured his 16-year-old daughter. Bert Watkins, 45, was located by TITANS Unit detectives yesterday in the James Cayce neighborhood where he was arrested on four outstanding warrants related to his involvement in the shooting.
The investigation, led by the Non-Lethal Shooting Unit, showed Watkins' daughter was shot in the hand after Watkins was engaged in a physical altercation with a 29-year-old man. The 16-year-old reported her father produced a firearm during the altercation.
The 29-year-old arrived at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury after he claimed Watkins pistol whipped him during the altercation.
The firearm was recovered from the scene and was reported stolen out of Memphis in 2022.
Watkins is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, theft of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a weapon.
