The 17-year-old driver killed in Saturday's 10:30 p.m. three-vehicle collision on I-40 West near Spence Lane is identified as Chance Lee Kimbro of Nashville.
The preliminary investigation shows that Kimbro was driving a 2015 Ford Fusion west on I-40 when he struck the rear of a semi-trailer. The Fusion completed several rotations and Kimbro was ejected from the vehicle onto the Interstate. He was then struck by a third vehicle. Kimbro died at the scene. An unidentified passenger of the Fusion fled prior to police arrival after attempting to get a ride from another motorist who had stopped to assist. The Ford Fusion had been reported stolen a few hours earlier at 6:15 p.m. from an apartment complex at 6001 Old Hickory Boulevard.
According to witnesses, Kimbro was traveling at a high rate of speed and changing multiple lanes prior to the collision. There was no evidence of drug or alcohol involvement at the scene.
