Violent Crimes Division and TITANS Unit detectives, with the assistance of a THP helicopter, teamed to arrest three teenagers, two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old, after an apartment in Cayce Homes came under fire by a gunman in a stolen Honda Accord. Four guns and ammunition were recovered.
On Friday, a man subsequently identified as Breontez Smith, 18, got out of the passenger side of the Honda and opened fire on a S. 7th Street apartment using an AR-15 style rifle. Four persons were in the apartment, but were not hit.
A THP helicopter in the air at the time assisted detectives in following the stolen Honda to an apartment complex at 3711 Dickerson Pike. Detectives tactically approached the car to take the occupants into custody, however the 16-year-old driver accelerated toward the entrance to the complex. A spike strip was deployed, deflating the car’s tires. The vehicle traveled across Dickerson Pike onto Tuckahoe Drive before coming to a stop on Belleshire Terrace Drive. Smith exited the car and fled into nearby woods. The 16-year-old driver and the rear seat passenger, Jahnacya Brown, 18, were taken into custody without incident. Smith was apprehended by a MNPD canine team.
As detectives retraced the car’s flight path from the Dickerson Pike apartment complex, they found an AR pistol and two Glock pistols laying on the side of Tuckahoe Drive.
During a subsequent interview with Brown, she admitted to having an AR-15 rifle with a drum magazine hidden inside her residence on Henry Hale Boulevard. She said she was keeping the gun for someone else. Detectives recovered the gun from Brown’s bedroom.
Smith is charged with auto theft, evading arrest and four counts of felony aggravated assault. His bond is set at $100,000.
Brown was charged Friday with vehicle theft and contributing to the delinquency of the 16-year-old. Additional warrants charging her with four counts of felony aggravated assault were issued on Saturday.
The 16-year-old is charged at Juvenile Court with auto theft, 2nd offense unlawful gun possession and felony evading arrest.
The Honda Accord was stolen on December 28th from the 1500 block of Dickerson Pike after the keys were left in the glove box.
