A 93-year-old woman, Mary Wood, and her son, Robert Wood, 61, were killed in Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. two-vehicle collision on East Old Hickory Boulevard at Myatt Drive.
The preliminary investigation shows that Robert Wood was driving his 2003 Chevrolet Impala north on Myatt Drive when he and the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox traveling east on Old Hickory Boulevard simultaneously entered the intersection and collided. The driver of the Equinox, Heather Markman, 39, crashed head on into the driver’s side of the Impala. Robert Wood died at the scene. His mother, the front seat passenger, was transported to Skyline Medical Center where she died. Markman was also transported to Skyline with non-life threatening injuries.
As Markman was being transported to the hospital she told a paramedic that she had consumed four shots of alcohol and two alcoholic beverages at a bar prior to the crash. The paramedic reported that Markman had a strong odor of alcohol. Markman later admitted to officers at the hospital that she had consumed alcoholic beverages. Based on physical signs of impairment (bloodshot/watery eyes and slowed speech) and her statements, a search warrant was obtained for a mandatory blood sample from Markman for analysis. She is currently charged with DUI and free on $1,000 bond.
The investigation continues into which motorist had the right of way in the intersection.
