UPDATE: Elton Maupins is in custody after arranging to surrender to two MNPD School Resource Officers. He is facing charges of criminal homicide and unlawful gun possession at Juvenile Court.
The investigation into Thursday night’s fatal shooting of Fernando Akins, 18, inside an apartment on West H. Davis Drive in North Nashville shows that the victim’s half-brother, Elton Maupins, 17, was handling a pistol when it discharged, striking Akins in the chest. He later died at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Officers responded to the shooting call at 6 p.m. They learned that after the shooting, Maupins went to his grandmother’s apartment nearby, told her what happened, and returned with her to render aid. Maupins fled soon afterward. Efforts to locate him last night and today have been unsuccessful.
Anyone seeing Elton Maupins or knowing where he could be is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. The pistol in this case has not been recovered.
