The Battle of Nashville was the last major battle in the western theater of the Civil War. More than 80,000 soldiers prepared for two weeks in wintry conditions before two days of fighting sent Confederates retreating. The Federal Army’s decisive victory was secured with the service of more than 10,000 black soldiers organized in segregated units called the US Colored Troops.
