Over 1,600 acres of Metro Nashville’s Beaman Park are designated as a state natural area, and you have the chance for a unique off-trail wildflower foray within Long Hollow. The protected hollow receives minimal visitation. As a result, the wildflowers along the stream provide an outstanding show.
This event starts along the relatively flat Ridgetop Trail, but we’ll then descend into Long Hollow for an off-trail streamside hike. Participants should plan on some wet feet and may wish to bring a hiking pole. During the four – five miles of walking, we’ll enjoy drifts of dwarf crested iris, violets, woodland phlox, dwarf larkspur, and many other species.
Trained in botany, your trip leader Roger will discuss the ecology of the forested system and teach techniques to help identify plants. Most importantly, we’ll savor the beauty of the flora and enjoy the chance to be in nature.
Participants should have a fitness level to hike off trail with some steep and rocky sections. Wear sturdy shoes you won’t mind getting wet, bring water and snacks. Participants may also wish to consider bringing a hiking pole.
