Riverbank Stabilization and Davidson Street Repair
Metro Parks has been monitoring erosion on the bank of the Cumberland River since 2021. The erosion had been progressing slowly and steadily until heavy rains in April, 2025 rapidly destabilized a roughly 500-foot portion of bank and caused considerable damage to Davidson Street in front of the US Naval Reserve Training Center.
Plans for stabilizing the bank, already in design, were quickly revised and expanded to include the damaged roadway. Construction began in early July.
Shelby Park Master Plan
In 2009, Metro Parks -- along with hundreds of neighbors, stakeholders and interest groups -- embarked on a first-ever master planning process for Shelby Park.
Phase One of the master plan was completed in 2012 and included the event lawn, a second Old Timers baseball field, pedestrian improvements, lighting and landscaping. The Metro Arts Commission integrated “Reflection”, by artist Lawrence Argent, into the Phase One landscape.
Phase Two was completed in 2014 and included the greenway trail from Lillian Avenue to Shelby Bottoms, and other improvements to circulation, parking, and landscaping.
Future phases of the master plan will be completed as funds becomes available.
